BENGALURU — A 26-year-old nurse is in critical condition in an intensive care unit after her estranged husband allegedly threw floor-cleaner acid at her and repeatedly assaulted her with a machete in broad daylight near JP Nagar on Thursday morning.

The violent assault occurred around 9:15 a.m. when the woman, a native of West Bengal who worked at a private clinic in the area, stepped out of the facility in JP Nagar Third Phase to have breakfast. The suspect ambushed her, flung corrosive cleaning acid at her, and chased her down as she fled toward the clinic’s basement entrance, where he cornered her and repeatedly struck her with the bladed weapon.

A purported video captured by witnesses showed a helmet-wearing assailant striking the victim multiple times with the machete while terrified bystanders looked on, with several recording the incident and a few attempting to intervene. According to law enforcement officials, onlookers hesitated to rush in directly out of fear that the armed assailant would turn the weapon on them.

Traffic police officers stationed at a nearby intersection heard the commotion, rushed to the scene, and apprehended the suspect before he could escape. Preliminary inquiries by the police suggest that the couple had been residing separately for some time following domestic disputes. The suspect remains in custody undergoing formal interrogation as investigators work to establish the full sequence of events.
