ITR Filing Deadline Ends Today, Portal Faces Heavy Traffic Amid User Complaints

New Delhi: The Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal witnessed a surge in traffic on Monday as the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 ended, prompting several users to complain of glitches and demand another extension.

Despite complaints of login failures, payment issues, and difficulties in downloading Annual Information Statements (AIS), the department maintained that the portal was “working fine” and ruled out any extension of the September 15 deadline.

“The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025,” the department reiterated in a late-night post on X on September 14, calling any claims of deadline extension “fake.”

Taxpayers, including chartered accountants, have shared concerns on social media over the past two days, with many reporting errors in uploading returns and making tax payments. In response, the department advised users to clear their browser cache, try different browsers, and share technical details via official support emails.

The Income Tax Department said AIS/TIS services were functioning normally and urged taxpayers to provide specific details such as mobile number and IP address if they continued to face issues.

Data released by the department showed that over 6 crore ITRs were filed till the afternoon of September 13. Last year, 7.28 crore returns were filed by the July 31 deadline. The current extension, granted in May due to structural revisions in ITR forms, moved the filing date from July 31 to September 15.

ITR filings have grown steadily in recent years, reflecting broader compliance and an expanding tax base. For AY 2024-25, a record 7.28 crore ITRs were filed up to July 31, 2024, compared to 6.77 crore the previous year, a 7.5% increase.
