El Alamein (Egypt): The Indian Air Force’s renowned Sarang Helicopter Display Team has arrived in El Alamein, Egypt, to participate in the second edition of the three-day El Alamein International Airshow, scheduled to take place from September 8 to 10. Operating the indigenously designed and manufactured Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv, the aerobatic team will present its signature formation routines, precision manoeuvres, and synchronized flying displays during the international event.
The five-helicopter fleet, distinguished by its vibrant peacock livery, along with support personnel and associated operational equipment, was transported from its home base at Air Force Station Sulur in Tamil Nadu aboard the IAF’s Boeing C-17 Globemaster III strategic airlift aircraft. Recognized globally as a rare helicopter aerobatic team, Sarang will perform alongside military flight demonstration units from several other participating nations.
Formed initially in 2002 as an evaluation flight squadron for the ALH platform developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the unit evolved into a dedicated display formation in October 2003 and was officially designated as the No. 151 Helicopter Unit. After operating from Yelahanka near Bengaluru, the squadron permanently shifted its operational station to Sulur near Coimbatore in 2009.
The deployment to Egypt underscores expanding bilateral defence ties and multifaceted military cooperation between New Delhi and Cairo, which includes joint training exercises, maritime security partnerships, and defence manufacturing collaborations. The visit also evokes a strong historical resonance with El Alamein, where around 25,000 soldiers from the Indian Army’s 4th and 5th Infantry Divisions fought during the crucial North African campaigns of the Second World War.
