Kathmandu: The devastating floods in Nepal have claimed at least 794 lives, while more than 2,500 people remain unaccounted for, as rescue and recovery operations continue across the flood-hit areas.
Authorities have intensified efforts to locate people believed to be trapped inside tunnels linked to several hydropower projects. Rescue teams are particularly focused on the Trishuli-3A project, where workers are feared to be stranded underground following the flooding.
Teams involving specialists from India and China have joined the search operations. Attempts are being made to establish communication with people inside the tunnels, but rescue personnel have so far been unable to make contact with those believed to be trapped.
Hydropower Workers Among Those Missing
A significant number of people listed as missing are believed to be employees associated with Nepal’s hydropower sector. With several projects located close to rivers and mountainous terrain, the floods have created major challenges for rescue personnel attempting to reach affected sites.
Search teams are continuing their operations in the hope of finding survivors, while authorities are also working to recover bodies from areas that remain difficult to access.
Bodies Recovered Across Eight Districts
Officials have reported the recovery of bodies from all eight districts affected by the disaster. Rescue agencies have been moving through damaged areas to locate those still missing and evacuate people stranded in vulnerable locations.
The scale of the disaster has also complicated the search operation, with damaged infrastructure and difficult terrain hampering access to several locations.
Deaths and Missing Persons Reported in Tibet
The floods have also caused significant casualties in neighbouring Tibet. The death toll there has reached 16, while another 546 people are reported missing.
Rescue personnel remain engaged in search operations on both sides of the affected region. Teams are continuing to comb through flood-hit locations as authorities race against time to locate missing people and assist those who may still be trapped.
With hundreds of people still unaccounted for, the focus remains on rescue operations and locating survivors, even as recovery efforts continue in the worst-affected areas.
