Aarau: One person was killed and at least five others injured after a shooting in northern Switzerland, police said on Sunday, as authorities launched a search for the suspected attacker.

The incident took place in the Aargau canton, with local police confirming that some of those injured were in serious condition.

Police launch manhunt

Aargau cantonal police said a manhunt was underway and appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident to share photos or video footage that could assist the investigation.

According to Swiss media reports, the shooting occurred during a rave party at a hippodrome. Footage published by Blick reportedly captured a series of gunshots during the incident.

Police have cordoned off large parts of Aarau as investigators work to establish what led to the shooting and identify the person responsible.

Authorities have also increased their police presence outside the town as a precaution following the incident.

Several victims seriously injured

At least five people sustained injuries in the shooting, with some reportedly in serious condition. Emergency services responded to the scene and the injured were taken for medical attention.

Police have not yet released detailed information about the identity of the deceased or the injured victims, nor have they publicly established a motive for the attack.

Investigators are examining available evidence and seeking information from witnesses to reconstruct the events.

Gun ownership high, shootings uncommon

Switzerland has one of the highest levels of civilian gun ownership in Europe, partly reflecting the country’s system of military service and firearm ownership.

Despite widespread access to firearms, serious incidents involving shootings remain relatively uncommon in the country.

Switzerland introduced tighter gun-control measures in 2019, bringing its regulations further in line with European Union standards.

The investigation into Sunday’s shooting remains ongoing, while police continue their search for the suspected perpetrator and have urged anyone with relevant footage or information to come forward.
