Washington: The United States has announced more than $3.6 million in humanitarian assistance for Nepal as the Himalayan nation continues to deal with the aftermath of catastrophic flooding that has killed hundreds and left nearly 3,000 people missing.

The US State Department said the assistance would provide urgent support to communities affected by the disaster, including emergency food supplies for thousands of households.

Aid to support flood-hit families

According to the State Department, the US package includes life-saving humanitarian assistance and emergency food support that could benefit up to 10,000 flood-affected households for as long as three months.

The assistance comes as rescue and recovery operations continue across Nepal, with authorities working to locate people still missing and provide relief to survivors in severely affected areas.

US focuses on safety of American citizens

The State Department also said the safety of US citizens remains a priority amid the disaster.

American diplomatic missions in Nepal and China are coordinating efforts to assist US nationals and support wider disaster-relief operations, according to the department.

The US said it was standing with the people of Nepal during the crisis and would continue supporting humanitarian efforts.

International assistance grows

The American announcement comes as Nepal faces the enormous humanitarian consequences of the floods, which have destroyed homes and damaged roads, bridges and other essential infrastructure.

Rescue personnel are continuing operations in affected areas, while relief agencies and governments are working to deliver food, medical supplies and other essential assistance.

With thousands of people still unaccounted for, the latest US funding is expected to provide immediate support to vulnerable families as Nepal moves from emergency rescue operations towards a longer recovery effort.
