Kathmandu: In a remarkable rescue amid Nepal’s devastating floods, a six-year-old girl was found alive beneath mud and debris three days after the disaster struck Rasuwa district.
The child, identified as Manisha Magar, was rescued from the flood-hit Timure village after personnel from the Armed Police Force (APF) reportedly heard faint cries coming from beneath the debris while searching for survivors.
Rescuers immediately began clearing the soil and debris and eventually managed to pull the girl out alive.
Found beneath debris in Timure
Timure was among the areas badly affected after the Bhote Koshi River overflowed following the devastating floods.
During search operations, APF personnel heard sounds coming from underneath the accumulated mud. The team followed the sound and discovered the trapped child.
She was brought out safely and initially provided medical attention at the APF Border Outpost in Timure.
However, her health condition later worsened, prompting authorities to arrange an emergency evacuation to Kathmandu.
Bad weather delays airlift
Plans to fly the girl to Kathmandu were affected by poor weather and low visibility. Rescuers continued monitoring her condition while waiting for conditions to improve enough for a helicopter flight.
The evacuation was eventually carried out on Saturday afternoon after the weather cleared sufficiently.
She was transported to a hospital in Kathmandu, where she is now receiving specialised medical treatment under close medical supervision.
Rescue sparks hope amid devastation
The girl’s survival after spending three days beneath flood debris has emerged as a rare moment of hope amid the large-scale destruction in Rasuwa and other flood-hit parts of Nepal.
Footage of the rescue was widely circulated on social media, with many users applauding the APF personnel for continuing their search despite difficult conditions.
Messages of appreciation poured in for the rescuers, while several social media users also appealed for information that could help authorities trace the girl’s family.
Search for family continues
Authorities are currently trying to locate Manisha Magar’s parents or other relatives.
People who may recognise the child or have information about her family have been urged to contact the concerned authorities so that she can be reunited with them.
As search and rescue operations continue across the flood-affected region, the survival of the six-year-old has provided rescuers and affected communities with a much-needed moment of hope.
