New Delhi: India has successfully carried out a high-altitude trial of an indigenously developed Military Combat Parachute System (MCPS), demonstrating the capability of the system to operate in some of the most demanding conditions faced by airborne troops.

The system, designed and developed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), DRDO, was tested at the Nyoma-Mudh Drop Zone, one of the world’s highest-altitude drop zones.

The test involved a jump from an altitude of 22,000 feet above mean sea level, with temperatures dropping to around minus 15°C. The trial was aimed at assessing the performance and operational suitability of the indigenous parachute system under extreme high-altitude conditions.

DRDO Test Team Carries Out High-Altitude Jump

The jump was undertaken by ADRDE test personnel, including Wing Commander Rahul Jha, Chief Test Jumper; Master Warrant Officer R J Singh, VM(G); and Master Warrant Officer Vivek Tiwari.

During the operation, the test jumpers used the MCPS along with its associated indigenous subsystems. These included a para computer, oxygen system and specialised jumpsuits, allowing the complete equipment package to be assessed in the demanding environment.

The parachute was deployed at approximately 20,000 feet, following which the jumpers descended safely and landed at an altitude of around 13,700 feet.

Trial Validates Performance in Extreme Conditions

The successful demonstration provided an important test of the MCPS under conditions involving extreme cold, high altitude and reduced atmospheric pressure.

The trial showcased the system’s efficacy, reliability and tactical employability, particularly for airborne operations in high-altitude areas where conventional operating conditions can be significantly different from those at lower elevations.

Testing the parachute and supporting equipment together also provided an opportunity to evaluate the performance of the indigenous subsystems as part of an integrated airborne system.

Boost to Defence Self-Reliance

The successful high-altitude trial marks another step towards strengthening India’s indigenous capabilities in specialised defence equipment.

The development of the MCPS by ADRDE, a DRDO laboratory working in the field of aerial delivery technologies, is significant for reducing dependence on foreign systems for critical airborne military requirements.

The successful demonstration at Nyoma-Mudh further underlines India’s efforts to develop and validate home-grown defence technologies for operations in challenging environments.

The trial is expected to contribute to the continued development and operational readiness of indigenous parachute systems for India’s armed forces, particularly for missions requiring airborne deployment at high altitudes.
