Supreme Court Declines Urgent Listing of Mahua Moitra’s Plea Over Nadia Circuit House Eviction

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra approached the Supreme Court of India on Monday challenging an eviction attempt by Nadia district administration officials from a state-owned circuit house in West Bengal. A three-judge Bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana declined to grant an urgent hearing after the matter was mentioned for expedited listing.

Presenting the plea under Article 32, Moitra’s counsel argued before the Bench that local administrative officials pressured the Krishnanagar lawmaker to vacate her officially allotted accommodation late at night on August 14, despite an existing protective order issued by the High Court. The counsel sought an early hearing and an independent probe, submitting that the midnight eviction bid involved constitutional issues and federal friction. However, the Bench expressed reluctance to entertain the plea on an urgent basis.

The dispute stems from an incident following the Parliament session when Moitra checked into the Krishnanagar Circuit House for an overnight stay. According to the MP, administrative officials asked her to leave late at night, citing a sudden booking embargo that was neither communicated during reservation nor upon arrival. Moitra had previously written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking intervention against alleged bureaucratic harassment, pointing out that a crowd gathered outside shouting slogans while the premises sat in a high-security zone directly opposite the residences of the district magistrate and superintendent of police.
