Amravati: A tragic fire at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Amravati District Women’s Hospital in Maharashtra claimed the lives of three newborn babies in the early hours of Monday, August 24. The incident occurred at the government-run hospital while several critically ill infants were receiving treatment.

The blaze reportedly erupted at around 3:30 am on the hospital’s third floor. Preliminary information indicates that a ventilator may have sparked or exploded before the fire spread through the neonatal unit. The exact cause, however, has not yet been established and remains under investigation.

Emergency Evacuation Launched

Hospital doctors, nurses and other staff immediately responded to the emergency and began moving newborns out of the affected area. Medical equipment was disconnected as the infants were evacuated from the smoke-filled unit.

Reports said 39 newborns were undergoing treatment in the neonatal unit when the incident occurred. Six babies who were affected were subsequently moved to a nearby super-speciality hospital for further medical care.

Despite the evacuation efforts, three infants could not be saved. Reports indicate that the babies suffered severe effects from the fire, including burns and smoke inhalation.

Cause of Amravati NICU Fire Under Probe

Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the suspected ventilator malfunction or the subsequent blaze. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the hospital equipment and fire-safety arrangements.

The tragedy has once again brought attention to the importance of emergency preparedness and equipment safety in neonatal care units, where patients are particularly vulnerable and often depend on life-support systems.
