New York: The Indian Consulate in New York has expressed grief over the death of Indian national Gurdeep Singh, who was fatally shot in Brooklyn in a late-night incident.
In a statement shared on social media, India in New York described Singh’s death as untimely and said the Consulate is in contact with his family. It also assured the bereaved family of all possible assistance during the difficult period.
The shooting took place on Friday night in the East New York area of Brooklyn. According to local police reports cited by CBS News New York, officers responded to a 911 call at around 10 p.m. near Crescent Street and Stanley Avenue, where they found Singh suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators reportedly shows two people involved in an altercation on the street before apparent gunshots were fired. One person was seen leaving the area in a vehicle after the shooting.
Police have continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. No arrest had been reported at the time of the latest available updates, and authorities have not conclusively established the motive for the shooting.
Reports from India have identified Singh as being from Jabbowal village in Punjab’s Kapurthala district. His family has said that he had travelled to the United States in search of better economic opportunities and had been working there to support his family.
Some reports have suggested that Singh was working as a pizza delivery worker when the incident occurred. However, accounts regarding the circumstances of the shooting have differed, with early reports mentioning a possible robbery while local police sources have indicated that the incident may have followed a road-rage-related confrontation. Investigators have yet to establish the definitive motive.
The killing has caused shock among Singh’s family and members of the Punjabi community. The family has sought assistance in bringing his remains back to India and has appealed for the identification and arrest of those responsible.
The Indian Consulate’s intervention comes as the investigation continues in New York. Authorities are expected to examine surveillance footage and other evidence as they work to establish exactly what led to the fatal confrontation.
