Chandigarh: A statewide shutdown called across Punjab by various Sikh organizations to demand the release of Sikh prisoners, known as Bandi Singhs, concluded at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, following which public transit, traffic flow, and commercial activity returned to normal across the region.
The bandh was organized to press government authorities for decisive action regarding prisoners who remain incarcerated despite having completed their court-mandated sentences. Demonstrations were held across several towns and cities throughout the morning, resulting in the temporary closure of markets, commercial establishments, and key retail districts as supporters gathered to voice their demands.
Vehicular movement and highway transit experienced localized disruptions and temporary diversions during the first half of the day due to roadside gatherings. In accordance with the pre-announced timeline set by the organizing bodies, the demonstrations ended promptly at 2:00 p.m., leading to the immediate reopening of shops and the steady restoration of regular traffic flow.
