New York: Officials from the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom have urged the American government to impose targeted sanctions against members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and withhold diplomatic courtesies and high-level engagements from its leadership. The recommendations were issued ahead of a planned trip to New York by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to attend a cultural event scheduled for late August.
Commission leadership publicly criticized the ideological organization, alleging that affiliated sub-groups have engaged in violence against religious minority populations, including Christians and Muslims. Officials argued that rather than extending formal reception to figures linked with the organization, diplomatic authorities should focus on accountability measures for reported violations of freedom of religion or belief.
The commission had previously recommended designating India as a country of particular concern in its annual assessments and suggested financial and travel restrictions on certain Indian entities. Indian diplomatic officials have consistently dismissed the advisory panel’s findings, characterizing the appraisals as biased, selective, and disconnected from the realities of the nation’s pluralistic society, while urging the body to address incidents of intolerance and vandalism directed at the Indian diaspora abroad.
