New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer and legendary off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is poised to take a significant step into cricket administration, with the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) nominating him as its official representative for the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), scheduled for September 28.

This marks a notable shift in Harbhajan’s post-retirement journey, as he transitions from on-field duties to behind-the-scenes decision-making at the highest level of Indian cricket governance.

A New Chapter in Harbhajan’s Cricketing Legacy

Harbhajan, who had already been serving as an advisor to the PCA, will represent his home state at the BCCI’s most significant annual gathering. The meeting will see elections for several high-profile roles, including President, Vice President, Secretary, Joint Secretary, and Treasurer. In addition, positions on the Apex Council and the IPL Governing Council will also be decided.

The 43-year-old, widely known as the “Turbanator,” is among India’s most decorated bowlers. Across a distinguished international career spanning over two decades, he picked up 711 wickets in 367 matches across all formats — 417 of those in Tests alone.

Ganguly, Dhumal, Shukla Among Other Notable Representatives

Alongside Harbhajan, several other familiar faces in Indian cricket are also set to attend the AGM. Former BCCI President and Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has been named the representative from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), marking his return to BCCI proceedings in an official capacity.

Other key figures nominated by their respective state associations include:

  • Raghuram Bhatt (Karnataka)

  • Sanjay Naik (Mumbai)

  • Arun Dhumal (Himachal Pradesh)

  • Rajeev Shukla (Uttar Pradesh)

  • Jaydev Shah (Saurashtra)

  • Pranav Amin (Baroda)

  • R.I. Palani (Tamil Nadu)

BCCI Elections: Key Dates and Guidelines

The BCCI has set September 12 as the final date for state units to submit their nominees. Candidates intending to contest elections must file nominations between September 20 and 21, with the last date for withdrawal being September 23. Voting will take place during the AGM on September 28.

The Electoral Officer has also issued strict compliance guidelines. All nominees are required to disclose any prior positions held within BCCI or its member associations. A formal declaration, signed and notarized, must accompany the nomination, as per Form C outlined in the official election notice.

A Strategic Move for Punjab Cricket

Harbhajan’s nomination signals PCA’s intention to have a strong voice in national cricket affairs. With his vast experience and deep understanding of the sport, his presence at the AGM is expected to bring valuable insights, especially on grassroots development and player welfare — areas he has championed in the past.

As Indian cricket continues to evolve off the field, Harbhajan Singh’s administrative debut could be a key moment in shaping the sport’s future direction, both in Punjab and nationally.
