Spiti: In a unique display of cultural harmony and goodwill, a delegation of around 20 senior citizens from Israel celebrated India’s Independence Day by hoisting the national flag in the high-altitude village of Komic, located in Himachal Pradesh’s remote Lahaul and Spiti district. Standing against the dramatic backdrop of snow-capped Himalayan peaks and centuries-old Buddhist monasteries, the visitors honoured the sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters while extending warm festive greetings to the nation.

The group is currently touring the tribal border areas of Kinnaur and Spiti through Shimla-based travel operator Summit Safari to explore the region’s unique Buddhist heritage, indigenous traditions, and distinct mountain lifestyle. Situated at over 15,000 feet above sea level, Komic is widely recognized as one of the highest motorable villages in the world, making the ceremonial flag hoisting a striking gesture of cross-border camaraderie.

As part of their itinerary through the cold desert valley, the travellers also visited the neighbouring settlement of Hikkim, renowned for housing the world’s highest operational post office. Commemorating the occasion, the visitors mailed Independence Day postcards and personal greetings directly from the remote postal outpost to their families back home in Israel.
