New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking urgent intervention after local authorities directed her to vacate the Krishnanagar Circuit House late at night, sparking a political standoff. In her communication to the Speaker, the parliamentarian raised serious concerns regarding the dignity, safety, and privileges of female lawmakers, citing the presence of an aggressive crowd shouting slogans outside the state-owned property while the eviction order was delivered.
Moitra stated that she arrived at the circuit house around 6:15 PM after being allotted a room, but received an unexpected call from the Nadia Additional District Magistrate after 9:45 PM asking her to leave. This was followed by a formal message citing “annual cleaning” as the rationale for cancelling the reservation. Calling the late-night administrative action a violation of her entitlements as an elected representative, Moitra emphasized that institutional safeguards must protect the country’s female parliamentarians from targeted intimidation.
The incident drew widespread support from opposition leaders across party lines. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav questioned whether the administrative directive constituted a breach of parliamentary privilege, while CPI(M) leader John Brittas and TMC Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien strongly condemned the handling of the situation and demanded accountability from parliamentary authorities. Moitra also flagged the development to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, noting the escalating tensions outside the venue.
The confrontation follows a string of recent political flashpoints in her constituency, including prior demonstrations involving stone-pelting and protests outside local party offices and judicial premises. While local opposition groups have attributed the recurring disruptions to internal political friction, the latest circuit house controversy has intensified national debates concerning parliamentary decorum and administrative protocol.
