Nanded Sahib: Police have taken a suspect into custody following an attack on Shiromani Akali Dal president and former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal at Nanded Sahib in Maharashtra on Thursday. Badal sustained an injury to his arm after an individual carrying a kirpan targeted him near Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur around 11:30 a.m. while he was visiting Takht Sri Hazur Sahib alongside his wife, Member of Parliament Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
Law enforcement personnel deployed on security duty intervened immediately during the assault. Inspector Santosh Kendra, who was stationed as part of the special security detail, also suffered injuries while protecting the Akali leader. Badal was taken to a nearby medical facility with a bandage on his right arm, where physicians confirmed that his condition is stable and he is out of danger.
Nanded police swiftly secured the scene and arrested the assailant. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage and questioning witnesses to establish the motive behind the security breach.
Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kewal Singh Dhillon strongly condemned the incident, expressing deep concern over the assault on the sacred grounds of historical takhts and wishing Badal a speedy recovery.
