Chandigarh: The Haryana Government has approved an administrative sanction of Rs. 12.42 crore for the construction of a new storm water drain along Old Delhi Road in Ambala City, from Jandli Flyover to Polytechnic Chowk, as part of its efforts to strengthen urban drainage infrastructure and provide a lasting solution to waterlogging during the monsoon.

Divulging more details in this regard, Public Health Engineering and Public Works Minister, Ranbir Gangwa said the government was adopting a long-term approach to urban drainage by developing robust, scientifically designed systems capable of meeting not only present requirements but also those arising from population growth and rapid urbanisation.

He said the existing drainage arrangements along Old Delhi Road had been facing overflow during heavy rainfall, resulting in water accumulating on the road and disrupting traffic. The new stormwater drain is aimed at addressing these recurring problems by increasing the capacity for carrying and discharging rainwater.

The Minister said the project is being taken up under a Chief Minister’s announcement and would significantly improve stormwater management along the stretch. The project has already received technical approval, followed by the administrative sanction.

Highlighting the government’s broader focus on urban flood management, Ranbir Gangwa said Rs. 80 crore has been earmarked under Urban Drainage and Flood Control for 2026-27. Several projects are being undertaken across the State to improve drainage networks, enhance rainwater discharge and reduce the risk of waterlogging and urban flooding.

Ranbir Gangwa said the government was planning development works with a long-term perspective rather than addressing problems only on an immediate basis. Strengthening modern drainage infrastructure, he added, was an important part of ensuring better civic amenities and greater resilience of urban areas during the monsoon.
