Leh: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale jolted the Leh district of Ladakh early Thursday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The seismic activity was recorded at approximately 6:05 a.m. IST at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, with the epicentre located at 36.881 degrees north latitude and 74.402 degrees east longitude. A subsequent tremor measuring 4.3 magnitude was registered in the region a few hours later at 9:54 a.m., also originating at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Because shallow earthquakes occur close to the Earth’s surface, the resulting ground shaking can be felt more intensely across surrounding areas. Despite the back-to-back tremors causing concern among residents in this seismically active belt, local authorities confirmed there were no immediate reports of loss of life or significant structural damage. Emergency management agencies and administrative officials continue to monitor the region for further developments while conducting preliminary assessments.
