Tarn Taran: A gunfight broke out between law enforcement officers and a wanted criminal during a security checking operation near Sarhali Sui in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district on Monday. The suspect, identified as Inder alias Ajay, sustained bullet injuries during retaliatory firing by the police and was subsequently taken into custody.
According to Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police Surinder Lamba, a joint operational team comprising personnel from the Crime Investigation Agency staff and the Sarhali police station had established a specialized security checkpoint near Sarhali Sui as part of an ongoing crime prevention drive. During the routine inspection, police officers signalled a motorcycle rider to pull over for verification. However, instead of stopping his vehicle, the suspect allegedly discharged a firearm at the police party while attempting to evade capture.
Police personnel fired back in self-defence, resulting in the suspect sustaining two gunshot wounds to his leg. The injured individual fell to the ground immediately following the exchange of gunfire and was apprehended by the officers on site. Law enforcement authorities recovered an illegal pistol along with the motorcycle used by the suspect from his possession. He was subsequently transported under police guard to the Civil Hospital in Tarn Taran to receive medical treatment.
Senior officials confirmed that the accused faces multiple serious criminal charges and was actively wanted by law enforcement in connection with several pending cases across the region. A detailed investigation has been launched by senior officers to uncover the suspect’s potential linkages with organized criminal syndicates and establish the precise motive behind his presence in the area.
