New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has announced that its train network recorded a 99.95 per cent punctuality rate in 2026, demonstrating sustained operational reliability despite massive network expansion over the years. According to official figures released by the transit authority, average daily ridership has grown exponentially from roughly 82,000 passenger journeys during its inaugural year of operation to 64.06 lakh journeys currently. The rapid transit system achieved its highest single-day ridership milestone on August 8, 2025, when it facilitated over 81 lakh passenger journeys across the National Capital Region.

Maintaining a stringent operational benchmark, the mass transit system classifies any train arriving more than 59 seconds past its scheduled time as delayed. Historical performance data highlights a steady upward trajectory in efficiency, climbing from 98.27 per cent in 2003 to 99.64 per cent in 2005, while consistently holding near the 99.9 per cent mark in subsequent years. The system’s Mean Distance Between Failures, which measures the average distance travelled before encountering a service-disrupting mechanical breakdown, reached 2.72 million car-kilometres. International evaluations conducted by the Community of Metros, a global consortium representing 45 urban rail systems, rank the Delhi Metro among the top five globally for operational dependability based on a two-minute delay criterion.

Modernization efforts have also led to significant reductions in train headways on high-density corridors, dropping from seven minutes during initial operational phases to two minutes and 18 seconds. Approximately 29 per cent of the total network now functions under Unattended Train Operation. The driverless Pink Line, spanning 71.55 kilometres and 45 stations, offers comprehensive interchange capabilities across the network. Since commencing commercial operations on December 25, 2002, with an initial 8.4-kilometre stretch connecting Shahdara to Tis Hazari, the network has expanded to 416.5 kilometres encompassing 303 stations across 12 operational lines and 31 interchange hubs.
