New Delhi: Vice-President-elect CP Radhakrishnan stepped down as the Governor of Maharashtra on Thursday, a day before he is formally sworn in as India’s 15th Vice-President.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan issued a communique confirming that Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat will hold additional charge of Maharashtra until a new appointment is made.

“Consequent upon demitting the office of Governor of Maharashtra by C. P. Radhakrishnan, due to his election as the Vice-President of India, the President of India has appointed Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties,” the statement read.

Radhakrishnan secured victory in the Vice-Presidential election on Tuesday, polling 452 of the 752 valid votes. He defeated Opposition candidate B. Sudarshan Reddy, with the result marked by significant cross-voting. On Wednesday, he was formally handed the winning certificate by the Election Commission.

President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office to Radhakrishnan at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday, ushering in a new tenure for the veteran BJP leader at the national level.
