Gurugram: The threat of another spell of heavy rain continued to loom over Gurugram on Saturday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed the district under a red warning. The alert came even as parts of the city experienced a temporary break from rainfall in the morning.
With the city still recovering from days of waterlogging, traffic snarls and rain-related disruption, the district administration has issued its third consecutive work-from-home advisory, asking private companies and offices to allow employees to work remotely.
Red warning signals fresh disruption
The IMD’s Chandigarh centre included Gurugram in its “Take Action” red zone in its latest tehsil-level nowcast. Officials warned that another spell of intense rain could result in water accumulating on roads, closure of underpasses and fresh traffic problems.
The red alert also covered Charkhi Dadri, Bhiwani, Rewari, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Jind and Panipat. An orange-level warning was issued for parts of central Haryana, including areas around Pataudi and Kosli.
Although several parts of Gurugram remained largely dry during Saturday morning, weather forecasts indicated that the respite may be temporary, with thunderstorms and renewed rainfall possible later in the day.
Administration asks offices to work from home
The latest advisory was issued by District Disaster Management Authority chairman and Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh.
The administration cited the impact of recent rainfall, with around 60 mm of rain recorded across Gurugram between 8 am and 5 pm on August 7. Officials said continued rain could worsen congestion and interfere with ongoing drainage and restoration operations.
The administration has therefore asked corporate offices and private institutions to permit employees to work from home on Saturday. Residents have also been advised to avoid unnecessary movement.
Third advisory in three days
The latest order follows two earlier advisories issued on Thursday, including one covering that day and another extending the work-from-home arrangement through Friday.
The repeated advisories underline the administration’s concern over the city’s vulnerable roads and drainage network following several days of intense monsoon activity.
The situation has also drawn considerable attention after Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini’s convoy was caught in a traffic jam near Sheetla Mata Temple earlier in the week.
More rain likely
The IMD has indicated that the monsoon has become active again in Haryana after a brief period of reduced rainfall. Rain has already been reported from several parts of the state.
A Yellow Alert has also been issued for Mahendragarh, Rewari, Jhajjar, Gurugram, Faridabad and Nuh, with heavy rain possible in these districts.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution, particularly while travelling through low-lying areas and roads prone to water accumulation, and to cooperate with civic agencies carrying out drainage and repair work.
