Amritsar: Amritsar Commissionerate Police have busted a cross-border arms trafficking module and arrested six people, including the alleged kingpin, in a major intelligence-led operation. Officials also recovered six sophisticated pistols and ₹5.75 lakh routed through hawala channels.

Police said the syndicate was being run by Mehakpreet Singh, also known as Rohit, who was acting under the instructions of his foreign-based handlers using social media. The crackdown began with the arrest of Pargat Singh, who was found in possession of two pistols that had been smuggled across the border.

Subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Ajaybir Singh, Karanbir Singh and Shri Ram, who were also caught with additional weapons. In a coordinated follow-up, police tracked and arrested Mehakpreet Singh from Goa, where he was found with three pistols. Dinesh Kumar was separately apprehended with ₹5.75 lakh in hawala money, believed to be linked to the arms trade.

The seized weapons include one Glock 9mm, three PX5 .30 bore pistols, one .32 bore pistol and one .30 bore pistol.

A case has been registered at Police Station Gate Hakima, Amritsar. Police said further investigations are underway to identify the wider network, including financial and cross-border linkages, and more arrests are expected.

The Punjab Police reiterated its commitment to cracking down on organised crime, arms trafficking and drug smuggling with full force.
