New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Wednesday approved a one-year service extension for two of the country’s top civil servants, Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan. The decision ensures administrative continuity across key government bodies overseeing national policy, internal security, and inter-ministerial coordination.

Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan, a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, has been granted an extension beyond August 30. Somanathan was appointed as Cabinet Secretary in August 2024 for a two-year tenure, succeeding Rajiv Gauba. Prior to assuming the role of the country’s top bureaucrat, he served as the Union Finance Secretary. This decision marks Somanathan’s first formal extension in the position.

Simultaneously, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan has been granted an extension beyond August 22, extending his tenure until August 22, 2027. Mohan, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Sikkim cadre, assumed office as Home Secretary in August 2024. Before leading the Ministry of Home Affairs, he served as the Union Culture Secretary. The extension will allow Mohan to continue overseeing key internal security operations and national law enforcement initiatives.
