Nagaon: A CRPF assistant sub-inspector allegedly shot dead two of his colleagues, injured another, and later died by suicide inside a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Assam’s Nagaon district on Tuesday morning, police said.
According to Nagaon Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) Paramita Sarkar, the incident occurred around 7 am at the 34 Battalion CRPF camp in Katimari. The accused, identified as ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, was on duty at the camp’s main gate when he opened fire on fellow personnel before turning the weapon on himself.
The deceased personnel have been identified as HV/GD Vishnu Prasad Baghel and SI/GD Ramnawal Singh Yadav, both of whom died on the spot. Another CRPF personnel, ASI/Mane Govind Sripul, sustained serious injuries and was initially taken to a private hospital before being referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.
Providing details of the sequence of events, Nagaon Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das said Premabaram, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh, was found without his assigned weapon while on duty at the camp’s main gate. He allegedly took an INSAS rifle from the guard room and proceeded towards the rear side of the Quarter Guard, where he first shot Baghel.
The officer then allegedly opened fire on Ramnawal Singh Yadav, who had reportedly arrived from Lucknow for document verification, killing him on the spot. Premabaram subsequently shot Sripul, causing severe injuries, before entering the B/171 Barrack and shooting himself.
Senior officials from the CRPF and Assam Police reached the camp soon after the incident. Authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the circumstances and motive behind the shooting. Police said the investigation is being conducted jointly by the Assam Police and the CRPF.
