New Delhi: Air India Express has announced that passengers traveling to or from Nepal until September 17 can either reschedule their flights at no extra cost or cancel their bookings for a full refund. The move comes as widespread protests continue in Nepal, affecting major cities including Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj.

The airline’s spokesperson said the flexible travel options are being offered to ensure passenger safety and convenience during the unrest, which has resulted in at least 19 deaths and around 500 injuries.

“In light of the ongoing situation in Nepal, passengers booked on flights to or from the country up to September 17, 2025, can freely change their travel dates without any change fees or fare differences. Alternatively, passengers choosing to cancel their bookings will receive a full refund to their original payment method or via their travel agent,” the statement read.

Passengers can easily access these options through Air India Express’ AI-powered assistant, Tia, by typing “NepalTravel.” Tia is available on the airline’s website, WhatsApp, and mobile app. The airline emphasized that operations to and from Nepal remain unaffected beyond the affected period and assured continuous monitoring of the situation.

The protests erupted on September 8 after the Nepali government imposed a ban on major social media platforms, citing concerns over taxation and cybersecurity. Demonstrators have demanded an end to systemic corruption and preferential treatment in governance, pressing for greater transparency and accountability.

In response to escalating tensions, curfews have been imposed in several cities, including Kathmandu. The unrest also led to the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who stepped down amid growing public dissent.
