Punjabi Students in Canada Continue Protest Over Work Permit Rejections; Many Share Stories of Financial Hardship

Edmonton: The ongoing protest by international students at Portage College in Canada has brought to light the emotional and financial struggles faced by many, particularly students from Punjab, after a large number of Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) applications were reportedly rejected.

The demonstrations, which have continued for nearly three weeks, revolve around allegations that students were assured at the time of admission that their courses would qualify them for a PGWP. However, many now claim they have been denied work permits despite completing their studies and investing substantial amounts in tuition and living expenses.

According to the protesting students, recent figures indicate that while only a small number of PGWP applications have been approved, several hundred have been rejected. They argue that this has left many graduates uncertain about their future and under severe financial stress.

One student from Punjab, fighting back tears while speaking at the protest, said her family had made enormous sacrifices to support her education abroad. She alleged that her in-laws sold agricultural land to arrange funds for her studies, but she is now struggling to pay rent and even meet basic living expenses.

She claimed that after spending nearly ₹22–25 lakh on education, she has been unable to secure a work permit or find stable employment. According to her, there were days when she survived without proper meals because of financial constraints.

Several other students also shared similar experiences, saying they had borrowed heavily to pursue higher education in Canada with the expectation of obtaining work opportunities after graduation. Many now fear returning home without employment while carrying significant debt.

Another student said she was unable to travel to India following the death of her grandfather because she was focused on completing her studies and securing her immigration status. She expressed regret that after sacrificing time with her family, she now faces uncertainty over her future in Canada.

Students participating in the protest also alleged that despite receiving written communication from the college regarding PGWP eligibility, Canadian immigration authorities have rejected their applications. They claim that changes in immigration policies introduced after they had already enrolled have adversely affected their prospects.

Some protesters further alleged that the college has informed them it cannot provide legal assistance or represent them in their dispute with immigration authorities, leaving them to pursue the matter independently.

Student representatives have appealed to elected officials and community leaders to intervene, urging both educational institutions and Canadian authorities to find a solution for those affected. They maintain that their demand is for a fair review of their cases and appropriate relief for students who say they relied on assurances provided when they chose their academic programmes.

The protests have continued peacefully, with demonstrators gathering in public spaces, carrying placards and seeking support from the local community as they await a response from the authorities.
