Yellow Alert Issued as Monsoon Intensifies in Himachal; Heavy Rain and Lightning Likely Across Several Districts

Shimla: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several parts of Himachal Pradesh, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning on August 2 as monsoon activity strengthens across the state.

According to the weather department, Mandi, Kangra, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una, Chamba and Kullu are expected to witness spells of heavy rain during the day. Light to moderate rainfall is also likely to occur across most other regions of the state, while higher-altitude areas may experience adverse weather conditions.

Authorities have cautioned that persistent rainfall could trigger landslides, rockfalls, flash flooding in vulnerable areas, rising water levels in rivers and streams, and waterlogging in low-lying regions. The changing weather may also affect road connectivity in several hilly districts.

The IMD has advised residents and tourists to stay away from rivers, streams and seasonal drains, as sudden increases in water levels cannot be ruled out. People have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and remain alert in landslide-prone locations.

Motorists travelling through the hill state have been asked to drive cautiously and verify weather and road conditions before beginning their journey. Officials have warned that reduced visibility, slippery roads and falling debris could create hazardous driving conditions.

Meanwhile, the state administration has instructed district authorities and disaster management agencies to remain on alert and closely monitor the evolving weather situation. Emergency response teams have been directed to stay prepared to handle any rain-related incidents.

The administration has also appealed to the public to rely only on official weather updates, avoid spreading rumours and strictly follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure their safety during the active monsoon spell.
