Glasgow: Indian para shot putter Soman Rana clinched a gold medal on Saturday at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, leading a successful session for the nation’s athletics contingent. Competing in the men’s F57 shot put final, Rana, a silver medallist at the 2022 Asian Para Games, delivered a season-best performance with a throw of 13.40 metres to claim the top spot on the podium. Fellow Indian athlete Shubham Juyal secured the silver medal with a throw measuring 13.28 metres, while Cedric Azamdzi of Cameroon earned the bronze medal with a mark of 12.57 metres.

India’s success continued in the jumping events, where Praveen Chitravel and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran captured silver and bronze medals respectively in the men’s triple jump final. Chitravel, an Asian Games bronze medallist, delivered a strong effort of 16.58 metres to finish in second position, while Thirumaran secured third place with a jump of 16.52 metres, marking his first major medal in international competition. Jamaica’s Jordan Scott captured the gold medal in the event after landing a top jump of 16.72 metres.

The day featured mixed results across other track and field events for the Indian squad. In the men’s T54 1,500-metre final, para-athlete Ramesh Shanmugam finished seventh with a time of 3:23.59. Meanwhile, in the women’s 10,000-metre race walk, Priyanka Goswami recorded a season-best time of 45:53.93 to finish seventh, while compatriot Ravina was disqualified following technical infringements during the race.
