Amritsar: A tragic incident was reported outside the 9th Battalion office on GT Road, Amritsar, on Sunday, where a constable allegedly shot himself dead. The deceased was identified as 25-year-old Gurkirat Singh, a resident of Urmanwal village in Gurdaspur.

ACP Dr. Sheetal Singh informed that the police control room received a call about a body lying in the parking area of the battalion office. When the police team reached the spot, the body was identified as Constable Gurkirat Singh. He had joined the police force in 2018 and was recently deployed in Pathankot for law and order duty during the Amarnath Yatra.

Police officials said that the exact reason for the act is not yet confirmed. A gunshot wound was found on his body, and his family has been informed.

Dr. Singh added that the real circumstances will be revealed only after the post-mortem report. Meanwhile, the police have collected evidence from the spot and further investigation is underway.
