Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has officially announced the comprehensive schedule and structural updates for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering 2027. Scheduled to take place on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21, 2027, the national-level entrance examination will be conducted across multiple sessions in a computer-based test format. The organizing institute revealed that the comprehensive syllabus has undergone its first major revision in five years to align academic testing metrics directly with the rapidly evolving demands of higher education and technological industries.
A headline feature of the newly released guidelines is the formal introduction of a brand-new test paper dedicated to Robotics and Automation, bringing the total number of evaluation fields to 30. This addition is designed to cater to the booming professional and scientific demand in smart manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and automated systems. Concurrently, structural changes have been implemented for existing disciplines; the Textile Engineering and Fibre Science paper will no longer function as an independent assessment and has instead been restructured as a sectional component under the broader Engineering Sciences category. Despite these major subject updates, the fundamental structure of the exam remains uniform, ensuring that all 30 papers will be offered exclusively in the English language.
To modernize the administrative process and prevent bottlenecks at testing venues, IIT Madras is rolling out enhanced digital infrastructure for the registration cycle, which is slated to open through the online portal. The upcoming application window will require candidate verification linked directly with DigiLocker platforms alongside specialized facial authentication. These security protocols are intended to guarantee secure, rapid identity verification, smoothing the entry pipeline for the hundreds of thousands of undergraduate engineering, science, and humanities students who compete annually. Successful qualifiers will secure a highly valuable GATE score valid for a full three-year period, unlocking access to financial assistance for advanced master’s and doctoral programs at premier state-backed institutes, as well as serving as a primary shortlisting criteria for lucrative technical careers within major Public Sector Undertakings.
