New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and top leaders of the National Conference were prevented by security forces from executing their planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar on Monday. The high-profile political stir, aimed at demanding the immediate restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s full statehood, collided with severe traffic gridlock and intensive security restrictions blanketting central Delhi. The sweeping lockdowns were triggered by the Cockroach Janta Party’s massive ‘Chalo Sansad’ march, which left key administrative zones heavily barricaded. Caught in the logistical clampdown, Abdullah resorted to hiring a local autorickshaw alongside his two sons to reach the alternate gathering point after his attempt to walk to the venue threatened to escalate tensions. Sharing a video clip of the ride on social media, the Chief Minister noted that the swift switch to public transport was necessary as his walk was rapidly turning into another massive public procession.
The National Conference organised the high-profile demonstration to coincide with the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, seeking to hold the Central government accountable to commitments made on the floor of the house and before the Supreme Court. Highlighting the political impatience brewing in the region, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary pointed out that twenty-one months had lapsed since those formal assurances were delivered during the 2024 Assembly elections, yet the region continues to experience structural uncertainty. Senior leaders, including NC President Farooq Abdullah and state Congress representatives who joined the stir, carried placards urging the Prime Minister to honour the original timeline for restoring regional rights and dignity. Despite heavy police interventions and the denial of access to Jantar Mantar, Omar Abdullah remained thoroughly defiant regarding the party’s long-term objectives. Taking to social media to rally his supporters, he firmly asserted that the suppression would not silence their voices, labelling the day’s events as merely the beginning of a sustained constitutional struggle for statehood, rights, and dignity.
