Kanpur: A 23-year-old engineering gold medallist allegedly died by suicide at his residence in the Gujaini area of Govind Nagar, leaving behind a note that expressed deep distress over his inability to secure a government job. The deceased, identified as Anand, had excelled academically, topping the B.Tech Electrical Engineering programme at a private institution in 2024 and securing the third rank across the state of Uttar Pradesh.
The tragic incident came to light when the family’s domestic help noticed that repeated knocks on Anand’s door went completely unanswered. Because the rest of the family had travelled to Bihar to finalise an elder brother’s wedding alliance, the helper alerted neighbours, who subsequently informed the local authorities. Police officers arrived at the three-storey residence, broke open the locked door, and discovered Anand hanging from a ceiling fan.
A handwritten five-line note recovered from the room addressed his father directly, offering an apology for failing to pass competitive examinations despite nearly 50 attempts. His father, a retired private sector employee originally from Buxar, revealed that Anand had completed a one-year apprenticeship with the Power Grid Corporation after graduation before dedicating all his time to competitive exams. Over the past several months, Anand had appeared for numerous recruitment drives conducted by the Railways, Staff Selection Commission, banking sectors, and the education department, which led to severe psychological stress. Station House Officer Ashok Kumar Dubey confirmed the recovery of the note, stating that while preliminary findings point to severe employment-related stress, a comprehensive investigation is underway to examine all angles.
