New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has directed government authorities to monitor the medical condition of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on a daily basis and promptly provide medical intervention as required. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia emphasized that the life of any citizen is precious and asserted that government authorities must make all necessary efforts to protect it.
The court passed the order during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that raised urgent concerns over the activist’s deteriorating health. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing both the Central and Delhi governments, stated that there was no objection to conducting regular medical examinations and assured the bench that a government medical team would ensure continuous monitoring. Following these assurances, the High Court disposed of the petition.
Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar since June 28. He joined an ongoing demonstration organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, a youth-led movement protesting for over 25 days to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination.
