Chennai: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and their long-serving head coach Stephen Fleming have decided to mutually part ways, bringing an end to one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). According to an official statement released by the franchise on Monday, the decision was reached with mutual respect and gratitude following a series of open and honest discussions between the former New Zealand captain and the Super Kings management. The split also concludes Fleming’s head coaching roles with CSK’s overseas subsidiaries, the Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and the Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket (MLC).
Fleming’s legendary association with the franchise began in the IPL’s inaugural season in 2008 as a player, before he transitioned into the role of head coach in 2009. Over the subsequent 17 seasons, Fleming built a formidable coaching unit that came to define consistency and humility in franchise cricket. Under his meticulous guidance, CSK established itself as a premier powerhouse, securing five IPL trophies alongside two Champions League Twenty20 titles. The team also created unparalleled records by entering the tournament playoffs 12 times and participating in 10 IPL finals during his historic tenure.
Extending her deepest gratitude, Chennai Super Kings Owner Rupa Gurunath described Fleming as the heartbeat of the coaching unit who helped shape the identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence for the franchise over nearly two decades. Managing Director KS Viswanathan echoed these sentiments, praising Fleming’s unique ability to understand people and foster a culture that put the team first. Reflecting on his departure, Fleming expressed that his 18-year journey with CSK was the absolute privilege of his coaching career, stating he leaves with nothing but pride and gratitude for the unforgettable victories and memories built together. The significant transition comes in the wake of a challenging period for the franchise, which saw a decline in on-field performance over recent years, culminating in an eighth-place finish in the 2026 IPL season.
