Muzaffarnagar: A Muslim youth was allegedly assaulted by a group of suspected Hindu activists in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, after he was seen sitting with a Hindu woman, police confirmed on Monday. The incident took place on Sunday evening while the duo was visiting a local snack shop.
According to the official complaint lodged by the woman, the group approached them at the establishment and demanded to know their identities. Upon learning their names, the attackers proceeded to physically assault the Muslim man, identified by police as Mehtab. Law enforcement personnel quickly arrived at the scene after receiving information about the altercation, successfully rescuing both individuals from the spot.
Circle Officer (City) Siddharth Misra briefed reporters on the subsequent legal action, confirming that a formal case has been registered against five individuals involved in the assault. The accused have been identified as Gaurav Sharma, Kushalvir, Shubham, Prashant Sharma, and Lokesh Saini. The police have invoked multiple provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), booking the suspects under sections 191 for rioting, 126 for wrongful restraint, 115 for voluntarily causing hurt, 75 for sexual harassment, 351 for criminal intimidation, and 352 for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
