Undertrial’s Death in Ludhiana Jail Sparks Probe, Family Seeks Accountability

Ludhiana: The death of a 19-year-old undertrial lodged at Ludhiana Central Jail has triggered a police investigation after his family accused prison authorities of failing to provide timely medical attention. The incident has once again brought the spotlight on healthcare facilities available inside correctional institutions.

The deceased, identified as Arshdeep Singh, was admitted to Ludhiana Civil Hospital after his health reportedly deteriorated while he was in judicial custody. Despite medical intervention, he died shortly after being shifted to the hospital.

Following the tragedy, Arshdeep’s mother alleged that her son repeatedly complained of health issues but did not receive adequate treatment inside the jail. She claimed that delays in medical care proved fatal and insisted that his life could have been saved had he been taken to a hospital earlier.

A post-mortem examination was conducted under the supervision of a magistrate before the body was handed over to the family for the last rites. The medical report is expected to play a key role in determining the exact cause of death.

Based on the family’s complaint, police have registered a case against unidentified persons under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators have begun collecting records related to the prisoner’s medical history, treatment provided inside the jail, and the sequence of events leading to his hospitalization.

Officials said statements of jail staff, medical personnel, and other individuals connected to the case will be recorded as part of the inquiry. Authorities are also expected to examine whether established protocols for handling inmates with medical emergencies were followed.

Arshdeep had been lodged in Ludhiana Central Jail in connection with a criminal case registered earlier this year and was awaiting trial.

Police maintained that the investigation is in its preliminary stages and that responsibility, if any, will be determined after examining medical evidence and official records. Meanwhile, the family has demanded a fair and transparent inquiry, saying they want accountability for what they describe as a preventable loss of life.
