Mumbai: Mumbai remained under an Orange Alert on Tuesday after continuous downpours and strong winds disrupted normal life across the city. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting more intense rainfall through the day, authorities ordered the closure of all schools and colleges as a precautionary measure.
Educational institutions run by the government, civic bodies and private managements suspended classes to ensure the safety of students, while residents were advised to avoid unnecessary travel unless essential.
The city witnessed another cloudy morning accompanied by gusty winds after a night of relentless rain that left several roads waterlogged and affected movement in many parts of the metropolis. Emergency teams continued clearing fallen trees and responding to incidents reported since Monday.
The IMD stated that the Orange Alert signals the possibility of heavy rainfall capable of causing localised flooding, traffic congestion, transport delays and interruptions to essential services. Citizens have been urged to remain alert and follow updates issued by civic authorities.
The spell of rain also affected key transport routes connecting Mumbai with neighbouring regions. Traffic on the Mumbai-bound lane of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway’s Missing Link section, which had remained suspended for several hours after a rain-triggered landslide, resumed late Monday night after engineers declared the stretch safe for movement. Officials said inspections were carried out before allowing vehicles to use the route again.
Elsewhere in Maharashtra, heavy rain continued to cause damage. Pune district reported multiple rain-related incidents, including landslides and wall collapses, resulting in fatalities and large-scale rescue operations. Authorities shifted hundreds of residents from vulnerable locations as a precaution against further slope failures.
Disaster response teams remain deployed in several districts, while local administrations have appealed to people living near hillsides, rivers and low-lying areas to stay vigilant. Weather officials have indicated that the active monsoon conditions are likely to continue, keeping emergency agencies on standby across the region.
