Amritsar: A video showing a foreign couple being stopped at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar for not following the shrine’s dress code has gained widespread attention online. The visitors, who were wearing shorts, were politely informed that they would need to change into appropriate clothing before entering the sacred complex.
According to eyewitnesses, the couple had arrived to offer prayers when a Sikh volunteer approached them near the entrance. He explained that while the shrine welcomes visitors from every faith and nationality, all guests are expected to follow the religious code of conduct, including wearing modest clothing and covering their heads.
During the conversation, the woman reportedly asked whether entry required a ticket. She was informed that there is no entry fee to visit the Golden Temple and that access is open to everyone, provided they respect the guidelines laid down for devotees and tourists.
The volunteer further clarified that the rule regarding clothing applies equally to men and women. When the tourist asked if her companion would also need to change, she was told that anyone wearing shorts is required to wear full-length trousers before entering the premises.
The couple accepted the explanation without protest and was advised to purchase suitable clothing from shops located near the shrine before returning for their visit.
The Golden Temple management has displayed multiple signboards around the complex outlining the dress code and other rules for visitors. The notices specify that shorts, mini-skirts, capris, caps and uncovered heads are not permitted inside the religious site. Visitors are requested to wear modest attire and maintain the sanctity of the shrine.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the importance of respecting local customs and religious traditions while visiting places of worship. Social media users largely praised the courteous manner in which the volunteers explained the rules, noting that the guidelines are enforced uniformly for everyone, irrespective of nationality or religion.
