New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a fresh advisory for Indian citizens planning to undertake the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, cautioning pilgrims against beginning their journey without obtaining all mandatory travel documents, including valid Chinese visas and entry permits.
The advisory comes after the ministry received multiple requests for assistance from Indian nationals who became stranded in Nepal after travelling with private tour operators despite not possessing the necessary authorisations required to enter China.
According to the MEA, several pilgrims had already reached Nepal in the hope that the remaining documentation would be arranged during the course of their journey. However, the absence of valid permits prevented them from proceeding further, leaving them stranded and seeking help from Indian authorities.
The ministry has advised prospective pilgrims to ensure that every required travel document has been issued and verified before departing from India. It stressed that beginning the pilgrimage without confirmed approvals significantly increases the risk of travel disruptions and unnecessary hardship.
Officials also urged travellers to exercise caution while selecting tour operators for the pilgrimage. The MEA recommended that pilgrims verify whether the agency organising their trip is officially registered and authorised to conduct Kailash Mansarovar tours, as unauthorised operators may fail to complete essential documentation.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, one of the most revered pilgrimages for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and followers of the Bon faith, requires travellers to cross into China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. As a result, participants must fulfil all visa and permit requirements prescribed by the Chinese authorities before commencing the journey.
The ministry noted that relying on verbal assurances or expecting documentation to be processed after reaching Nepal can lead to significant delays and leave travellers in difficult circumstances. Pilgrims have therefore been encouraged to confirm every aspect of their travel arrangements well in advance.
Officials have also advised travellers to remain in regular contact with their tour operators and carefully review the itinerary, documentation requirements and official approvals before making financial commitments or beginning the pilgrimage.
The latest advisory serves as a reminder that proper planning and compliance with international travel regulations are essential for a smooth and safe pilgrimage. The MEA reiterated that while it continues to assist Indian nationals facing genuine emergencies abroad, travellers should take all necessary precautions to avoid preventable complications.
With the pilgrimage season underway, the ministry has urged devotees to prioritise documentation and choose only credible tour organisers to ensure that their spiritual journey proceeds without avoidable obstacles.
