Chandigarh: Chandigarh Police stepped up security across the city on Friday night following recent firing incidents reported in Punjab’s Rajpura and Batala, launching a large-scale checking drive at key locations and public hotspots.
As part of the heightened security measures, police sealed major entry and exit points to the city by setting up barricades and conducting intensive vehicle inspections. Officers verified the identities of commuters while keeping a close watch on suspicious movement to prevent any potential security threat.
The late-night operation also targeted clubs, bars and other crowded establishments where police teams carried out surprise inspections. Officials checked whether commercial establishments were complying with prescribed closing hours and scrutinised the identities of visitors present inside.
According to police sources, special emphasis was placed on verifying the backgrounds of people arriving from outside Chandigarh. Individuals whose movements appeared suspicious were questioned on the spot, while some were taken aside for further verification and detailed interrogation.
The operation was supervised by senior officers of the Chandigarh Police’s Operation Cell, which coordinated searches across multiple locations simultaneously. Officials said such establishments have remained under surveillance in previous investigations involving criminals who entered the city from neighbouring states.
Security has also been strengthened across sensitive areas, including markets, transport hubs, hotels, parks and religious places. Police patrols have been increased throughout the city, with personnel deployed on both foot and vehicle patrols to maintain constant vigilance.
Authorities said the enhanced security measures are preventive in nature and will continue until the overall threat perception returns to normal. Chandigarh Police appealed to residents to cooperate with checking teams and promptly report any suspicious activity to help maintain public safety.
