New Delhi: India’s high-speed rail ambitions received a significant boost following the official approval of seven new bullet train corridors by the central government. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi greenlit the extensive expansion programme. This mega-infrastructure development moves forward as construction continues to gather pace on the flagship Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project.

Speaking at a recent event, Vaishnaw stated that the high-speed rail network is advancing steadily. The newly proposed corridors are expected to reshape inter-city travel and strengthen economic connectivity across diverse regions, creating integrated industrial and commercial ecosystems.

The expansion program targets some of the busiest economic zones across the country. According to railway officials, the new high-speed links will connect major urban hubs through the Mumbai–Pune, Bengaluru–Chennai, Bengaluru–Hyderabad, and Pune–Hyderabad lines. In the northern and eastern sectors, the network will map out routes from Delhi to Lucknow, Delhi to Varanasi, and Varanasi onwards to Siliguri.

These strategically planned routes aim to drastically reduce commuting times between vital commercial and technology hubs. Commuters traveling the highly congested Mumbai to Pune route can expect travel times to drop to roughly 48 minutes, while a journey between Pune and Hyderabad will be condensed to just under two hours. The expanding grid is envisioned as a group of closely linked economic zones, drawing major cities closer to support seamless business, trade, and regional development.

Concurrently, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited reported that India’s inaugural bullet train line between Mumbai and Ahmedabad is moving steadily toward its operational debut. Overhead electrification works are progressing rapidly along multiple stretches, with more than 8,500 OHE masts already installed to power the future services. Spanning 508 kilometres, the flagship project incorporates advanced engineering features, including 25 river bridges and the country’s first undersea rail tunnel. The first section of the line is expected to begin operations next year, running at speeds up to 320 kilometres per hour.
