Dehradun: A 23-year-old woman preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) allegedly died by suicide at her home in Dehradun’s Chandrabani locality on Tuesday morning, leaving behind a brief note expressing love and apology to her parents.

The deceased, identified as Ria, was known for her strong academic record. She had secured 96.7 per cent marks in her Class 12 examinations and later emerged as a topper in her college. According to family members and officials, she had been dedicating herself to preparing for the NEET examination and was reportedly under pressure related to the re-examination process.

Police said the incident came to light when Ria’s mother called her for breakfast at around 10.30 am but received no response. Concerned, the family opened the room and found her unresponsive. Authorities were immediately informed, and a police team reached the spot to begin an investigation.

Circle Officer (CO) Sadar Ankit Kandari stated that a handwritten note recovered from the room contained only a few lines, including the words “Mom and Dad, I love you” and “I’m sorry,” indicating her emotional state but offering no detailed explanation for the extreme step.

During the preliminary inquiry, investigators spoke with the family, neighbours and others close to the deceased. According to officials, none reported any significant behavioural changes or visible signs of depression in the days leading up to the incident.

Her parents told police that the family had attended a religious jagran together the previous night. Since Ria usually studied late into the night, waking up late in the morning was considered part of her normal routine and did not raise any immediate concerns.

Police officials said the young woman lived with her parents and siblings, and nothing unusual had emerged from the investigation so far that could directly explain her decision. Statements from those close to her suggested that she remained focused on her studies and had not exhibited any alarming behaviour.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are continuing to examine all aspects surrounding the case.
