Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Administration has announced a public holiday on June 18 in observance of the martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru, whose sacrifice is remembered with deep reverence across the country.
According to the notification, all government departments, boards, corporations, educational institutions and industrial establishments functioning under the Chandigarh Administration will remain closed on Wednesday.
The holiday will allow devotees and residents to participate in religious observances and commemorative events being organised to mark the occasion. Special prayers, kirtan programmes and community service activities are expected to be held at various gurdwaras across the city.
Guru Arjan Dev is remembered for his teachings of peace, humility and service to humanity. His martyrdom is regarded as a significant event in Sikh history and is observed annually by devotees through religious gatherings and acts of charity.
Officials said the holiday would be applicable to all offices and institutions under the administrative control of the Union Territory. Essential and emergency services, however, will continue to function as per routine arrangements.
With the declaration of the holiday, government offices, public sector undertakings and several educational institutions in Chandigarh are expected to remain closed for the day, while religious congregations are likely to witness a large turnout of devotees paying tribute to the Sikh Guru.
The administration has also appealed to citizens to maintain peace and cooperate with authorities during the observance of the occasion.
