New Delhi: Messaging platform Telegram has approached the Delhi High Court challenging the Central government’s decision to temporarily restrict access to the application ahead of the NEET UG re-test scheduled for June 21.

The matter was mentioned before Justice Tajas Karia, who agreed to take up the petition for hearing on Wednesday. The platform has sought judicial intervention against the government’s move, which was announced as a precautionary measure before the medical entrance examination.

The Centre had decided to impose temporary restrictions on Telegram ahead of the re-test amid concerns over possible misuse of online platforms during the examination process. Authorities are reportedly taking steps to prevent the circulation of unauthorised information, question papers or other examination-related material through digital channels.

Following the government’s decision, Telegram moved the High Court challenging the restrictions and questioning the action taken against the platform.

The NEET UG re-test is being conducted after concerns were raised regarding irregularities linked to the examination process. Security measures have been strengthened to ensure transparency and prevent any attempts to compromise the exam.

The court is expected to examine the arguments presented by Telegram as well as the reasons cited by the government for restricting access to the platform.

The development comes amid increasing scrutiny of online communication platforms during major competitive examinations, with authorities focusing on preventing digital channels from being misused for spreading confidential information.

Further details of the hearing and the court’s observations are awaited.
