New Delhi: A devastating fire that erupted in a multi-storey residential building in Delhi’s Tughlakabad area during the early hours of Friday left three people dead and several others injured, prompting a large-scale rescue operation by emergency services.
The incident occurred at a building located near Naya Tara Apartment on Madhyam Marg, where flames rapidly spread through the structure, trapping several residents inside. Fire department officials received multiple emergency calls within minutes, reporting both the blaze and people stranded on different floors.
Acting swiftly, the Delhi Fire Service deployed several firefighting units, including water tenders, water bowsers, a breathing support vehicle, and a quick response team. Despite the narrow lanes leading to the building, firefighters managed to reach the site and begin rescue operations.
Officials said at least six people were pulled out of the building by fire personnel, while several injured occupants were shifted to nearby hospitals with the assistance of emergency medical teams. Earlier reports indicated that eight injured individuals had been taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment.
Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have originated from vehicles parked within the premises before engulfing other sections of the building. However, the exact cause of the blaze will be established after a detailed investigation.
The firefighting operation continued for more than an hour before authorities declared the flames under control. Rescue teams remained at the site even after the fire was extinguished to ensure that no occupants remained trapped inside.
Fire officials confirmed that the building consists of a ground floor and five upper levels, making evacuation particularly challenging under the circumstances. The operation was led by senior officers of the Delhi Fire Service, who coordinated firefighting and rescue efforts through the night.
Police have initiated an inquiry into the incident, while authorities are expected to examine compliance with fire safety regulations in the building. Further details regarding the identities of the deceased and the condition of the injured are awaited.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the importance of fire safety measures and emergency preparedness in densely populated residential areas of the national capital.
