Punjab Braces for Intense Heat as IMD Issues Yellow Alert; Rain Likely to Return Midweek

Chandigarh: A fresh spell of scorching weather has gripped Punjab and Chandigarh, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heatwave conditions across several districts until June 11. Authorities have issued a Yellow Alert and advised residents to take precautions during peak afternoon hours.

The state’s mercury has climbed sharply over the past 24 hours, registering an average increase of 2.1 degrees Celsius. Bathinda emerged as the hottest location with a maximum temperature of 44.8°C, while Chandigarh recorded 39.9°C. Meteorologists said temperatures are now hovering close to seasonal averages after a brief period of relief.

Districts along the Rajasthan border, including Fazilka, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Bathinda and Mansa, are expected to experience the harshest conditions. Officials have urged people, especially children, senior citizens and outdoor workers, to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight between noon and 4 pm.

The soaring temperatures have also pushed up electricity consumption across the state. Power demand touched nearly 12,000 MW during the afternoon and evening hours, with Punjab meeting a significant portion of its requirement through supplies from the central grid. Despite the increase, authorities have maintained that adequate power arrangements are in place to meet consumer demand.

Weather experts attribute the current hot spell to dry atmospheric conditions and the weakening of earlier weather systems over north India. However, relief may not be too far away, as a new Western Disturbance is expected to influence the region from June 11 onwards.

According to the Meteorological Centre, isolated areas could witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds between June 11 and June 13. Wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 kmph in some districts, potentially bringing down temperatures after several days of intense heat.

The forecast indicates that dry conditions will continue on June 9 and 10, with heatwave conditions likely to extend to more districts, including Ferozepur, Faridkot, Moga, Barnala, Sangrur and Ludhiana. On June 11, parts of Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar and Mohali are expected to receive rain and thunderstorms, while several central and southern districts may continue to experience high temperatures.

Officials have advised residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and follow weather updates as conditions evolve over the coming days.
