Kerala: An elderly resident was assaulted and robbed by three unidentified individuals who broke into his house at Mullakkara during the early hours of Sunday. The perpetrators managed to escape with cash and a significant amount of gold ornaments after leaving the victim restrained inside the house.
According to law enforcement authorities, the break-in took place at around 2:30 am at the residence of 72-year-old Somasekharan. The victim was alone at the property during the incident, as his wife and daughter were visiting a relative’s home. The intruders reportedly gained access to the house by forcing open the lock on the rear door.
After locating and collecting gold ornaments stored inside an almirah, the three suspects confronted Somasekharan. They woke him up, tied his hands, and subjected him to a physical assault. Before fleeing the scene, the robbers also forcibly took the gold chain and ring that the elderly man was wearing. In total, the thieves made away with 45.5 sovereigns of gold, valued at approximately Rs 49.5 lakh, along with Rs 50,000 in cash.
The victim managed to free himself after the suspects departed and immediately alerted local authorities. A team from the Mannuthy police station arrived at the residence shortly after to initiate preliminary inquiries. Investigators revealed that the victim overheard the three assailants communicating with each other in Hindi during the robbery.
Given the close proximity of the residence to the National Highway, the Mannuthy police have expanded their investigation to review regional CCTV footage. Officers are currently tracking the movements of all vehicles that passed through the vicinity around the time of the crime. A formal case has been registered, and a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspects.
