Delhi Faces Persistent Heat Burden as Most Areas Experience Repeated Temperature Stress: Study

Delhi: A new analysis has highlighted the growing challenge of extreme heat in the national capital, revealing that large parts of Delhi have been exposed to recurring heat stress over the past decade.

According to a report released by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), nearly three-fourths of Delhi’s geographical area experienced heat-stress conditions for six years or more between 2015 and 2024. The findings point to a worrying trend of prolonged exposure to high temperatures across the city, particularly in densely populated and heavily built-up zones.

The study found that almost the entire city recorded heat-stress levels at least once during the ten-year period, indicating that extreme heat is no longer confined to isolated pockets but has become a widespread urban concern.

Researchers noted that many key public spaces and activity hubs, including markets, educational institutions and construction zones, are situated in areas repeatedly affected by elevated temperatures. This raises concerns for workers, students, street vendors and other vulnerable groups who spend long hours outdoors.

The report stresses that rising urban temperatures are being intensified by factors such as rapid concretisation, shrinking green cover and the heat-retaining nature of built infrastructure. Experts warned that frequent heat episodes could have serious implications for public health, productivity and overall quality of life.

The organisation has called for targeted measures to strengthen Delhi’s resilience against extreme weather. Suggested interventions include expanding urban greenery, improving access to cooling spaces, redesigning public infrastructure and enhancing protection for populations most vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

With climate variability increasing and heatwaves becoming more frequent, the report underlines the need for long-term planning and adaptive strategies to reduce the impact of extreme temperatures on residents across the capital.
